Being guided kindly and patiently as a student has revealed my own potential in a stimulating and enjoyable environment. While I can’t promise your child will become a grandmaster overnight, I can assure you that they will have a fantastic time and enhance their confidence, intellect, and concentration. I look forward to seeing you! “- David

“My journey with chess has been amazing over the past few years. Chess has not only enhanced my football skills by teaching me about positions, roles, understanding opponents, setting goals, and creating space, but it has also improved my concentration, flexibility, logic, and problem-solving abilities. Playing chess brings me so much joy; I can’t imagine my life without it!” — Lachlan

Johnny Cong

Johnny joined Norwest Chess Academy as assistant coach in November 2022. Since then, Johnny has consistently demonstrated qualities of responsibility, humor and kindness, which have been warmly received and appreciated by students.

“Chess is extremely interesting to me, the concept of how there are  more possibilities than atoms in the entire universe will never not shock me. Witnessing a grandmaster utilize a single move to unleash a series of calculated responses never fails to captivate me. While I am not a grandmaster myself yet, one doesn’t need that title to enjoy the game.  Chess is a massive passion I have. It can bring me to a focused state almost immediately. It’s a pursuit that anyone can learn and discover interest in.”  – Johnny

Kevin Chen Chess coach profile picture

Kevin Chen

At just 5 years old, Kevin was introduced to chess by our head coach, Michael Zhou. Since then, he has made remarkable strides, winning numerous medals and trophies in various chess tournaments. By the age of 14, Kevin achieved an impressive FIDE Rapid Rating of 1765 and a Blitz Rating of 1627. He has become a benchmark player, the one everyone aspires to challenge and defeat. Now, Kevin is eager to pass on his exceptional skills and share his experience with our students.

“The biggest challenge I face in playing chess is learning to handle losses. You can’t expect to win every game – that’s just how life is. There will always be someone stronger out there, so don’t let a loss, or even two or three, discourage you. Each loss is a chance to learn and grow your skills.” – Kevin
